Accidents that make you laugh

Yesterday afternoon we took the kids to the playground. As we were on our way back to the car, Jed was plowing ahead, running and roaring (which he seems to do a lot of these days). Chloe was walking sedately a few feet in front of him when she stopped short and--you guessed it. Jed bowled her over, stepped on her head, and landed on his nose. Now normally I don't find the kids' accidents humorous, but this one really hit my funny bone. As I knelt down on the ground to comfort two screaming kids, it was all I could do not to laugh my head off. Of course neither one was seriously injured; they were fine five minutes later. What added to the humor was that as Evan took Chloe to comfort her, Tucker took advantage of the opportunity to race back to the playground from which we'd already had to forcibly remove him. I was so glad Evan was there to help! Lindsay drove in to the playground at that moment and was met by quite a sight!

Time to go get the kids some breakfast. It's grocery day and the cupboard is bare. I'm hoping we have enough milk to fix cereal. It's amazing how much food we go through these days. What's it going to be like when they're teenagers and their appetites have doubled?!

So what DO you like?

Yesterday the kids and I were at a playground when a friendly boy about Jed's age walked up to Jed and asked if he likes Power Rangers. Jed gave a slightly scornful no. The kid then wanted to know if he likes Pokemon. Slightly scornful no again. "So what DO you like?" "I like the British!" Oh, of course! The poor kid looked at me all puzzled and wanted to know if I could tell him what he likes. I gave some vague answer, because I was definitely not feeling up to giving the ten-second version of who the British are and why Jed likes them. I guess this story illustrates one of the beauties of homeschooling: kids can choose for themselves what they're interested in, not what's popular at school or what's considered cool. Of course we're thrilled that he's so fascinated by history, but in a school setting that might not be considered completely normal or cool, which is kind of sad!

We're having Derrick and Wesley over for dinner tonight to celebrate Wesley's birthday. It's always a treat to have the "uncles" over. The kids adore them. The other day at church Chloe sat in Uncle Wesley's lap for probably 20 minutes, just as still and quiet as can be. Can she sit with you every Sunday, Wesley? You're the only one that can work that kind of magic with her. :-)

Bunk bed and Concord

Yesterday we went to Concord again. This time Jed got to talk with a man dressed as a Colonial! Here are some pictures from our day, along with a picture of the boys' new bunkbed, which has been absolutely fabulous. We got it at Bob's furniture store. For those of you on the East Coast, you know the commercials are beyond obnoxious, but they gave us the best deal compared to three or four other stores. The trick with the bed is getting Tucker to realize that his bed is on the bottom, not the top with his adored big brother. :-)

I am grateful to report that Jed came through his surgery this morning with flying colors. In case you hadn't heard or had forgotten since reading previous entries, Jed had his frenulum clipped, or a frenectomy. That little string of tissue under his tongue was a wee bit tight and may have been contributing to his speech difficulties and slooooowness in eating. Anyway, he had it cut this morning at the Elliot 1-day outpatient surgery center. I was very impressed with the doctors and nurses and their way with children. They took excellent care of Jed and made him feel at ease.

As far as recovery goes, his has to be about the quickest recovery in the history of surgery. He was groggy when he came out of the operating room and said his tongue hurt and felt funny (they numbed it), but by this afternoon he was back to his rambunctious self and bouncing off the walls. (I rather miss the quiet little boy who snuggled in my lap this morning.) He hasn't needed any of the Tylenol with codeine we picked up at the pharmacy and was even asking for toast at lunchtime, which seems like a rather scratchy food but didn't bother him one bit.

So thank you all for your prayers and concern! We're very grateful for the Lord's hand on Jed and for blessing the whole procedure. We are now free to pursue speech therapy and finally get him some help in making himself understood.
